When our Congressman Tom Garrett decided to host a Townhall we were thrilled to voice our concerns as his constituents. But when we learned that the event would be housed at a venue on Grounds that would cater to less than 300 constituents, we decided to reserve a larger venue and off it to the Congressman. The movement quickly gained support on social media and the movement #TomLetsTalk was born. On the day of the Town Hall we hosted a Democracy fair on Southlawn and a rally in the amphitheater. It was a great demonstration what democracy actually looks like: individuals uniting in an effort to communicate with their representatives.

This weekend we attended the Virginia Young Democrats convention in Harrisonburg. In addition to elections for the organization, we heard from all of the candidates for statewide office this coming fall. We look forward to helping elect whoever emerges from the primary in June.
We were thrilled that Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam stopped by Grounds today! He talked with us about how he got involved with politics and how we can address the issues facing Virginia today. He also took our questions ranging from the opioid crisis and Medicaid expansion to transportation and gerrymandering. It was a wonderful experience, and we hope he'll visit again soon!
On Friday, President Trump signed the executive order "Protection of the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States,” disallowing Syrian refugees from coming into the US, suspending the refugee program for 120 months, and barring immigrants and visitors from majority-Muslim countries Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen from entering the US for at least 90 days. Neither the University Democrats nor the College Republicans condone the executive order, as we believe it is not in keeping with the values upon which our nation was founded. Below, you’ll find our joint statement. Please read and share on Facebook, if you'd like.
Our winter fundraiser is ongoing! We are excited for the rest of the semester, but we need your help to make sure Grounds stays blue. Please follow the link below to read our fundraising letter and donate!
Yesterday was our first meeting of the semester. Turnout was great, with many familiar members as well as a number of new faces. We were joined by representatives from Young Democrats of Virginia and wrote letters to legislators about HB1410, a bill that would place requirements on public institutions of higher education, including UVa. We sent dozens of letters, so be on the lookout for news about an education bill dying in committee. Join us next week as we continue to work through our #udems100days checklist!
